The modern American family looks quite different today than the “traditional,” Leave it to Beaver family of sit-com lore.  The traditional notion of a family was understood to describe a heterosexual couple who remain married until death parts them and who naturally conceive and raise their own children.  However, evolving social norms, changes in the law and advances in technology have challenged those notions.  Given these changes, advisors must be prepared to handle the special challenges that often arise when working with non-traditional – modern – families.  This session will review a number of the most frequently confronted issues and potential planning strategies for navigating these challenges.    \n\nJoshua R. Caswell is an attorney with Howland Evangelista Kohlenberg Burnett LLP, where his primary practice areas include estate and tax planning, special needs planning and probate and trust administration.  Howland Evangelista Kohlenberg Burnett LLP is a dedicated Trusts & Estates boutique law firm, founded in 2014 by former Edwards Wildman attorneys.  Howland Evangelista Kohlenberg Burnett LLP brings decades of collective knowledge, experience and integrity to solving client issues and taking the time to find thoughtful solutions for each and every client.\n\n\n \nJoshua is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, cum laude, and he received his law degree, cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School.  He is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State of Rhode Island.\n\n\n \nJoshua has authored and co-authored a number of articles on estate planning, including “Making the Case for the General Power of Appointment” and “Proposed Regulations on Estate Planning for Family Controlled Entities.”  He is a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association’s Committee on Probate and Trust Law, the New Developments Committee of the Boston Bar Association Trusts & Estates Section, and the Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law of the American Bar Association.  \n\n\n \nJoshua also serves as treasurer of the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning Rhode Island and was recently named a 2017 “Rising Star” in the New England edition of Super Lawyers Magazine.  \n\n\n
